Deadline For Cooling Assistance In Virginia Approaching Soon

Monterey and Warm Springs, VA – The deadline to apply for the 2011 Cooling Assistance from the Virginia Dept of Social Services Energy Assistance Program is Monday, August 15th. Virginia’s 120 local departments of Social Services will accept applications postmarked or received through Monday.

Aid is available to households with a child under 6 years old, a person with disabilities, or an adult age 60 or older living in the home who meet the programs income and eligibility requirements. The maximum gross monthly income before taxes is $1,180.00 for a single person household and $2,422.00 for household of four.

The types of assistance available include:

Financial aid to help with electric bills for cooling equipment
Payment of security deposits for electricity for cooling equipment
Repair of central air conditioning or heat pump
Purchase of a whole-house fan, including ceiling or attic fans
Purchase and installation of a window unit air conditioner for households without a working unit

Those who are eligible may qualify for more than one kind of assistance. Assistance is available until existing funds are depleted. For more information, contact the office in Highland County at 468-2199 or in Bath County at 839-7271.
