Fundraising Event to Benefit Highland Fire Department

Service organizations such as the Highland County Volunteer fire department rely heavily on the donations and charity of citizens to support their efforts.  Adequately serving the community requires new equipment, supplies and training, which means a constant need for funding.

With this in mind, the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department is currently selling tickets for a raffle to raise money for new equipment. The raffle will conclude this Friday, September 6th, with an event at the firehouse in Monterey. Crystal Waybright, volunteer firefighter with the department explains.

“September the 6th, 2014, at 4 o’clock, we’ll be having a fundraiser at the Highland County Volunteer Firehouse in Monterey, Virginia,” said Waybright. “We have approximately $10,000 worth of prizes to give away. We have money prizes, we have tools, I believe 4 guns, we have electronic devices, we have stuff for outdoor events, and there’s many other prizes.”

Waybright noted that there will be other activities that night as well, including a 50/50 raffle, entertainment from local residents, and a meal.

“If you buy a ticket, with your ticket stub, you will get a free meal, and if not, the meals will be $10,” she said. “You can purchase your raffle tickets from any member of the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department, and they are on sale throughout the county, and surrounding counties in some of the businesses. They’re $20 for 1 ticket, or 6 for $100. Tickets will still be available at the door on September the 6th.”

Waybright went on to explain that the organization will put all proceeds to good use.

“Well, we just recently bought a new fire truck, it will be our brush truck, so, the proceeds from this will go towards putting new equipment on the brush truck,” she said. “The fire department has approximately 25 members, we are always looking for volunteers, and is also run pretty well strictly on donations, so anybody that can help us, we would greatly appreciate it.”
