 The Forest

The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests (GWJNF) lies in 34 counties in the mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky.  The area covers nearly 1.8 million acres of public land, representing one of the largest blocks of public land in the eastern United States. We have six Ranger Districts and one National Recreation Area.

Duty Station

Positions will be offered in multiple offices on the GWJNF.

Major Duties

The forest engineering organization manages approximately 3,000 miles of road, over 700 administrative buildings, and numerous recreation facilities, water and wastewater systems, dams, bridges, and a hazmat program.

Engineering Technician, GS-0802-8/9

One position each in Norton, Marion, Blacksburg, Natural Bridge, Hot Springs, Harrisonburg, and Edinburg VA. Position focuses on overseeing the transportation system at the District level. Background in construction, planning, land surveying, roadway drainage, erosion control BMPs, roadway inspections, and/or road maintenance preferred. No minimum education requirement.

Engineering Technician, Facilities GS-0802-10/11

Up to four positions in multiple duty locations. Positions support the forest-wide facilities program. Seeking individuals experienced in construction, planning, land surveying, building inspection, maintenance, design, and/or management of buildings, water and wastewater systems, hazmat, HVAC systems, and/or dams. No minimum education requirement.

Engineering Technician, Transportation GS-0802-10/11

Up to four positions in multiple duty locations. Positions support the forest-wide transportation program. Seeking individuals experienced in construction, planning, land surveying, roadway drainage, erosion control BMPs, roadway design and inspections, and/or road maintenance. No minimum education requirement.

Civil Engineer Trainee, GS-0810-05/07/09 (Roanoke, VA duty location only)

Up to two Civil Engineer trainee positions may be hired, one in Transportation group and one in Facilities group.

Civil Engineer, GS-0810-11

Up to two Civil Engineer positions in multiple duty locations, one in Transportation group and one in Facilities group. Positions focus on design, contract package preparation, contract administration, inspection, and reporting as needed within the respective program. CADD and land surveying experience a plus.

Civil Engineer, GS-0810-12

Up to two Civil Engineer positions may be hired focused on Appalachian Trail bridges and infrastructure. Strong background in horizontal structures, land surveying, bridge inspection, and/or hydrologic/hydraulic analysis preferred. Possible duty locations are limited to Marion, Blacksburg, Natural Bridge, Roanoke, or Harrisonburg, VA.

Supervisory Civil Engineer, GS-0810-12

One supervisory Civil Engineer, Transportation Program Manager, will be hired. Position serves as the program and team lead for the Transportation group. Professional Engineer’s licensure a plus.

Heather is our Program Director and Traffic Manager. She started with Allegheny Mountain Radio as a volunteer deejay. She then joined the AMR staff in February of 2007. Heather grew up in the Richmond, Virginia, area and now lives in Arbovale, West Virginia with her husband Chuck. Heather is a wonderful flute player, and choir director for Arbovale UMC. You can hear Heather along with Chuck on Tuesday nights from 6 to 8pm as they host two hours of jazz on Something Different.
