Get Ready For College For Free With New River CTC

Marlinton, WV – Have you ever considered taking college courses but just weren’t ready to take that first step? Perhaps you think you’re too old or out of practice. Well this is your chance to be part of a free program to jump start your college education.

New River Community and Technical College offers Prep 4 College Success classes starting June 8th. The program is geared towards those with a high school diploma or GED who have never attended college. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 4:30pm for nine weeks beginning June 8th at the Snowshoe Career Center in Marlinton. Jolie Lewis, a WV Adult Basic Education instructor at the Center hopes that many people will take advantage of this opportunity.

College may not be for everyone. Lewis says one of the goals of the classes is to give participants an idea of whether or not college is right for them. She says they may also help those who don’t want to go to college, but do want to brush up on their basic skills in Math, English and computer literacy. Participants are required to complete a diagnostic compass test to determine their level of knowledge before the classes start.

Local instructors will teach the classes. Joanna Burt-Kinderman teaches the math classes, Maribeth Saleem-Tanner teaches English and Rebecca Clayton will teach the computer classes.

Best of all the tuition and books are free. Lewis says they have about half as many student as they need to hold the class, so she’s hoping for many more to sign up by June 7th. For more information or to register, contact the Career Center at 304-799-2509.
