Green Bank Eighth Grader Is 2012 Pocahontas County Spelling Bee Winner

Green Bank, WV – The 2012 Pocahontas County Spelling Bee was held at Green Bank Elementary Middle school on Thursday, January 19th. 12 students from each school, 3 each from grades 5 through 8, gathered in the library at Green Bank. After taking the students through a practice round, the competition got started.

A good many of the students were eliminated in the first round, attempting to correctly spell some rather challenging words. After a couple more rounds, it was down to the final three – eighth grader Xnobia Varner from Green Bank and two sixth graders from Marlinton – Laura Leyzorek and Logan Dilley.

In the end, Xnobia Varner won the competition by correctly spelling the word Carnage’, with Logan Dilley taking second place, and Laura Leyzorek with third. Varner and Dilley will automatically advance to the state spelling bee competition in March. Leyzorek will be an alternate for that competition if either of the other two students cannot attend. Congratulations to all the competitors in the county bee.
