Highland County Circuit Clerk Swears in New K9 Officer

Highland County’s new K9 officer Carly is now official!

Early Monday Morning, October 1, Carly was officially sworn in by Highland County Circuit Clerk Judy Hupman.

“Do you Carly, solemnly swear that you will support the constitution of the United States, the constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and that you will faithfully and impartially charge all the duties incumbent on you as a drug dog and deputy sheriff, badge #124, of the Highland County Sheriff’s Department for a term beginning October 1, 2024 until December 31, 2027 to the best of your abilities so help you God?”

Carly, accompanied by her handler Sargent Danny Hull remained calm and collected throughout the ceremony, with Hull answering for her.

“I think she said yes!”

Carly, wearing her official badge, then had paperwork to sign, marking it with her paw print.

Highland County Sheriff Bob Kelly said Carly would be going into the school within the next couple of weeks and will begin patrolling immediately. He echoed Commonwealth Attorney Megan Yelen’s statement from the recent Board of Supervisors work session that he expected arrests, specifically drug offenses, to increase with Carly’s involvement.
