Highland County Photos Are Winners in Virginia Vistas Contest

According to a press release, Scenic Virginia has announced it’s 2021 Virginia Vistas Photo Contest Winners and Honorable Mentions and two of those are Highland County photos.

The winner in the Highways & Byways Category is Michael Bedwell of Monterey, with “Blue Grass Road,” his photo of Blue Grass Valley Road in Highland County.

Michael Bedwell wrote of his photo, “The road from Hightown to Blue Grass in Highland County is a marvelous road indeed. Here the Potomac River is born, and eagles nest.  Every season has its own beauty, but fall is particularly spectacular. Anywhere you look along the 7.1-mile drive on Rt. 640 yields panoramic vistas of mountains, valleys, shadow, and light. On this cloudy day after rain, the wet road, fallen leaves, and saturated colors created an image that drew me in and drove me on to see what was just beyond that next rise.”

An Honorable Mention in the Farms & Open Spaces Category, is Annette Naber of Monterey, with “When the Cows Come Home,” her photo taken along Doe Hill Road in Highland County.

In 2021, Virginia’s scenic beauty continued to be a tremendous source of comfort in an uncertain world.  Scenic Virginia Executive Director Leighton Powell said, “We heard time and again that our Commonwealth’s incredible scenic resources were boosting mind, body, and spirit. Knowing that, we loved providing a reason to get people outdoors to capture their favorite scenic places. They did, and we couldn’t be more pleased to share the Winners and Honorable Mentions of our 14th Annual Photo Contest!”

Scenic Virginia is the only statewide conservation group dedicated solely to preserving, protecting, and enhancing the scenic beauty of the Commonwealth, with a particular focus on the preservation of significant views and vistas.  To learn more, visit www.scenicvirginia.org
