Highland County pool opens June 10

Monterey, VA –

The recent warm weather had Highland County residents flocking to the swimming pool in Monterey over the three days of Memorial Day weekend. With that holiday treat now over, the pool is getting ready to open for its summer season. Recreation Director Kenny Hiner talks about the pool hours of operation and highlights other recreation activities on the summer schedule.

“We’re going to officially open the pool on June 10,” he said. “The hours of operation will be, Monday through Saturday from 12 to six. Water aerobics will probably follow that from six to seven, along with adult swim. Sunday hours are from one to six. We started, last year, having our pool parties all through the week. They are from six to nine. The cost of a pool party is $130 and there’s an extra $20 charge if they want to use the kitchen.”

“We’re always looking for lifeguards. So, if you’re interested in becoming a lifeguard, stop by the pool and talk to me or talk to one of the guards. We’ll see what we can do about getting you certified and getting you a job.”

Kenny goes on to talk about the other recreational opportunities associated with the swimming pool.

“We’re trying to start the water aerobics a week after we open the pool,” he said. “We’re going to try and offer a morning and evening class of that. We now have horseshoe pits up and running down there. If you want to go pitch at night, we’re working on getting lights put up on our building that will shine down on the pits. We’ve also got our picnic grove. We’ve got two barbecue grills over there now. We’re going to have picnic tables in place down there this weekend.”

T-Ball has been a popular sport for Highland County youth this spring. There are two teams and 24 players participating at the present time. Kenny talks about some of the special events coming up this summer.

“I also planning on having the t-ball team from Franklin come up and play a couple games this year and then have like a pool bash afterwards,” he said. “They were good enough to do that with us last year. So, I’m going to be in touch with them to see if they want to bring their t-ball team up this year and we can return the favor.”

“For programs this summer, I’m looking into youth flag football – probably start running that in July. Also want to start a youth basketball league this summer. We didn’t do it last year, but we’re going to try and bring it back this year, because there’s a lot of people that want to get involved with that. Mountain Mama’s coming up on August 4. We’re going to have the pool open for the riders and the public, that weekend, for free.”

Daily admission to the Highland swimming pool is $3 for adults and $2 for children 16 years and under. Children 6 years and under are admitted free. There are also multiple day punch passes and season passes for sale at the pool.
