Highland County Sheriff’s Office Seasonal Scam Alert

This is Highland County Sheriff Bob Kelly with a seasonal scam alert from the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.

As we enjoy the summer months, I want to remind everyone to stay alert for seasonal scams. Unfortunately, this time of year often brings an increase in fraudulent activity. Scammers may pose as representatives of legitimate companies or government agencies and pressure you into making immediate payments or providing personal information. Please be cautious. If something doesn’t feel right, take a moment to verify before taking any action. Never allow anyone to pressure you into making financial decisions or sharing sensitive information. If something feels wrong, trust your instincts and don’t make hasty decisions.

I also want to make everyone aware of another scam we have been seeing. The Highland County Sheriff’s Office will not contact you by text message asking you to provide personal information so that a deputy can file a report or complete an investigation. If you receive a text message claiming it came from the sheriff’s office requesting personal information, do not respond. Do not click any links or provide any information. If we need information from you, a deputy will contact you by telephone or speak with you in person. If a message seems unusual, suspicious, or simply doesn’t seem right, it is likely an attempt to gain access to your personal information.

Remember, “Dee something, Say something”. If you believe you have been contacted by a scammer or notice suspicious activities, please contact the Highland County Sheriff’s Office. We are here to help and would rather answer your questions than see someone become a victim of fraud.

As we enjoy everything summer has to offer, please stay aware, stay alert, and look out for one another. Check on your neighbors, lend a helping hand when you can, and work together to keep Highland County a safe place to live, work, and visit. Have a safe, enjoyable, and scam-free summer.
