Highland County’s Memorial Day Event Is Saturday, May 28th In Monterey

Monterey, VA – Highland County’s Memorial Day Observance will take place this weekend. Jim Blagg, secretary of the Stonewall Ruritan Club of McDowell talks about this year’s event.

“This Saturday at noon at the Highland County courthouse, the Stonewall Ruritan is sponsoring this year’s Memorial Day observance” says Blagg. “It’ll run about 30 to 40 minutes and we have as our guest speaker the Honorable Dickie Bell. The Highland HS band will also play some selections for us during the event.”

Dickie Bell is one of Highland County’s representatives in the Virginia State Legislature. Weather permitting, the observance will take place at Monterey’s Veterans Memorial, which was completed about four years ago. Members of the public attending the event may want to bring their own lawn chairs if they don’t wish to stand during the ceremony. Mr. Blagg goes on to mention the Stonewall Ruritan members who are organizing this year’s event.

“The program was put together by the Patriotism and Citizenship committee of the Ruritan Club” says Blagg. “If the weather’s not cooperating, then we’ll have the event inside the courthouse, but hopefully it will be a nice day to have it outside.”

The responsibility to organize the Memorial Day and Veterans Day events each year rotates between the county’s four Ruritan clubs. This year’s Veterans Day in the fall, will include an observance of the 10 year anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy and will be jointly sponsored by all four county Ruritan clubs. The public is cordially invited to attend the Memorial Day observance in Monterey on Saturday at noon.
