Highland High School Hosts Blue Ribbon Award Ceremony December 10th

Monterey, Va – The Highland School Board accomplished its goal this week of giving bonuses to school employees. On Tuesday evening, the Board of Supervisors approved use of just over $34,000 in Federal Education Jobs funding to give a 1 and % bonus to school employees.

At Monday’s School Board meeting High School Principal Kelly Wilmore gave the board an update on current and upcoming events.

“Blue Ribbon ceremony, we brought home our Ribbon, we have our plaque, we have a ceremony this Friday at 2 o’clock” says Wilmore. “School board members are cordially invited as is the general public. Mr. Simmons is playing the party planner for this along with Ms. Ralston. Benchmark testing is going on right now until Christmas with our teachers; kids are on the computers. We do have some new students within the last several months; we’re really working hard with those kids getting them caught up to where they need to be.”

Elementary School Principal Theresa Blum also made a report to the Board.

“We had our Veterans Day breakfast, it was a success; if you were here it was a wonderful program” says Blum. “Our Lego team competed in November at James Madison University. They did not advance, but they did a wonderful job and had fun. Ms. Nelson is going to have a Lego club beginning in January to keep the interest alive and keep practicing.”

She goes on to talk about this year’s Destination Imagination team and the new Rising Stars Program.

“Destination Imagination is underway and for the first time ever, we have a Rising Stars team” she says “which is a kindergarten to second grade team. They don’t compete, so to speak, but they do their problem. December 14th is our Winter musical at 7:30 in the gym and the 15th is the high school band concert, also in the gym at 7:30pm.”

Principal Blum also thanked all those in the community who made the fundraiser dinner for the Chapman Family this past weekend at the school, such a success. Over $10,000 was raised for Tracy’s medical expenses.

The next meeting of the Highland County School Board will be Monday, January 10, 2011 at 7 PM in the High School Library.
