Highland Humane Society Events
Housing homeless pets is a continuous issue requiring many resources. The Highland County Humane Society helps an average of 350 animals per year through their network of volunteers and resources. Corena Huffman, executive director of the Highland County Humane Society, dropped by the WVLS studio to talk a bit with Scott Smith about the services they offer and upcoming fundraisers that support their work.
“I’m Corena Huffman with Highland County Humane Society here in Monterey, Virginia. We are an animal rescue, we’re foster-based, mostly volunteer-run. We also have an active pet retention program, which means we help community members with their pets, anything from free pet food to spay/ neuter services, transportation, pet supplies, that sort of thing. If you need help with your animal, reach out to us. We do have some grant funding available through the Little Swiss Fund and also the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge.”
In addition to grant funding, the Humane Society also relies on donations and fundraising events to provide these services.
“Okay, we actually have two fundraisers coming up. The short one would be the yard sale that we’re having this Saturday, July 18, from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. The yard sale will be held at the firehouse in Monterey, Virginia, and it’s name your price, so we have a lot of great stuff. Come by and see what we have. I’m sure we have something for you, and you pay what you’d like to pay, and get to go home with some goodies.”
“All right, all you 80s folks, we have a Retro 80s Music Party to be held at the Barn that’s right behind the Monterey Inn on Main Street, Monterey, Virginia. It’s going to be on August 1st, starting at 6:00 pm. We will have food, drinks, music, and dancing. There will be a DJ spinning some great tunes from the 80s, which is the best era in music ever, and we will also have a special music guest.”
“It is a co-ed event this time, but it is still 21 and up. You can get your tickets on our Facebook page, which is at Highland Humane, or you can go to MontereyInnva.com under the events tab to purchase a ticket, or you can purchase tickets the night of the event. The event again is August 1st at 6:00 pm.
