Highland Medical Center welcomes new dentist

Monterey, Va. – B. Laurel Casey, DDS will begin her full time dental practice, including preventative and restorative dental services, at Highland Medical Center(HMC) in Monterey, Virginia on Tuesday, August 7.

“She is a welcome addition to the HMC Medical and Dental Staff and our community,” said HMC Medical Director Dr. Kim Bird.

Dr. Casey was born in a small town in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in Connecticut where she lived until she completed high school. She left Connecticut to attend the University of Rhode Island where she earned a degree in Dental Hygiene and later taught full-time in the Dental Hygiene Department while attending graduate courses part-time. In 1983, she received a Master of Arts in Education degree with a specialty in Adult Education.

She moved to Richmond Virginia the same year to accept an appointment as Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry (VCU MCV) where she taught dental hygiene, dental, and nurse anesthetist students. She graduated with a Doctor in Dental Surgery degree from VCU MCV in 1999 and then completed a residency at the University of Florida College Of Dentistry Jacksonville in 2000. Since that time, Dr. Casey has practiced dentistry both in private practice, and in community health dentistry, which is her passion.

Dr. Casey is married to Dr. David J. Mayer, a retired Emeritus Professor of the Medical College of Virginia.

Dr. Casey spoke of her new community.

“Our experiences in Monterey thus far have caused us to see not only how beautiful the area is, but how special it is-how much the individuals in the community act to show their care for the community, how interknit the community is, and how we can not only contribute to the community, but also benefit from being among such a community of individuals,” she said.

The HMC Dental Programs offers care to all regional residents including those who qualify for Medicaid. For more information or to schedule an appointment with Dr Casey, please call (540)468-3500, or our toll-free number (855)468-3300.
