Highland Mid-Kids Radio Club Interviews Jay Myers

“Hello, this is Amelia Good with the Highland Mid-Kids Radio Club, and today we are talking with new middle school English teacher, Jay Myers. Thank you for joining us today. Could you tell us more about yourself?”

“Sure, thank you for having me today. I am originally from West Virginia. I was born and raised in Preston County. My senior year of high school, my parents and I moved to Petersburg, West Virginia. And I am a career changer – I did not start college until I was 24, and decided I wanted to become a teacher.

“I’m Lexi Grant. What made you choose teaching as a career?”

“I choose teaching because I want to help children see success in their life, and I did some student teaching. Once I did that, it just solidified it in my mind that that’s what I wanted to do the rest of my life.”

“I’m Daisy Moyers. What brought you to Highland County?”

“I came to Highland County because my wife and I decided to move on to her family’s farm. The family farm is on (Route) 220 north from here. It is actually three miles north of the state line, so it is in West Virginia. And I wanted to continue teaching in Virginia, so that brought me to Highland County.”

“Mr. Myers, what is your favorite thing about teaching?”

“My favorite thing about teaching is it’s never the same. Kids always come to school with different attitudes and things that are on their mind, and so teaching is never boring.”

“What do you enjoy doing when you’re not teaching?”

“I enjoy spending time with my family sitting on the front porch. listening to the spring in front of the house, and I also love to trout fish.”

“Thank you for joining us – this has been the Highland Mid-Kids Radio Club for Allegheny Mountain Radio.”

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center. He lives in Hightown with wife Michelle and son Ethan. In his spare time, he wishes he had more spare time, especially to ride his prized Harley-Davidson motorcycle. scott@amrmail.org
