Hiner Town Trout Fishing Open in Highland County

There’s a new business open in Highland County where all ages can fish and enjoy the outdoors, especially children since fishing can provide a unique experience.  Hiner Town Trout Fishing is a fee fishing pond owned and operated by Carl and Ruth Hiner.

“They’re easy enough that it keeps children’s attention,” says Ruth Hiner.  “They don’t get bored with it, but they still have to learn to watch their bobber or the feel of the rod when a fish bites on the hook.  It’s just been really exciting.  I love watching the children’s faces.  Some of these kids have never fished before and so they’re all excited to catch one.  Then when you want to get a picture of them, they won’t go near it.   So, it’s pretty funny to watch, but I enjoy it.  That’s why we’re doing it.  I just think that the children need things outside to do.”

The fishing fun is not just limited to the children.

“I’ve had people come from like Richmond and they’re curious, so they’ll turn in and they’ll go ‘So what’s going on here?’,” says Hiner.  “And I explain all this to them and they’re like ‘I’d like to try that, I’ve never fished before’.  And so I’ll take them over with poles and teach them how to cast and they thoroughly enjoyed it.  I actually had one couple come back a second time because they had such a good time.”

Plan to take your own fishing poles and bait.  Hiner has a couple of poles and bait if someone shows up and doesn’t have equipment.  She wants anyone who just stops by to be able to enjoy fishing.

“I have some gold trout put in the pond along with the rainbow trout and if children, smaller children, I would say no bigger than ten, catch a golden trout, then I have prizes for them,” says Hiner.

Hiner Town Trout Fishing will be open all year.  It’s located on Route 220, about one mile north of Monterey.  The cost is $5.00 per pound.

“Back in the day this area where we are was Hiner Town,” says Hiner.  “We found out when we had gone to a bank for refinancing that on the map it’s still listed as Hiner Town.  So we brought it back by giving that name to our pond.”

Hiner Town Trout Fishing is open Monday through Saturday 9am to 7pm and Sunday by reservation.
