Ingalls Field Terminal Project: Progress Update
Ingalls Field Airport in Bath County has been a key part of the region since it first opened in 1937, serving as both a transportation hub and a unique outdoor destination with scenic views and nature trails. But in early 2023, concerns over the structural integrity of the terminal building led to its closure, setting off a long process to replace it.
Since then, the Bath County Airport Authority, led by Chairman Jeff Ford, has been working through multiple layers of approval from state and federal agencies to move the project forward. In August 2023, a temporary facility was put in place to maintain airport operations while studies were conducted, plans were drawn up, and funding sources were secured.
Now, more than a year later, real progress is being made. The project involves demolishing the old terminal and constructing a new 5,000-square-foot facility designed to enhance airport operations and improve services for pilots, visitors, and the community. Site work, utility upgrades, and exterior improvements such as landscaping and lighting are also part of the plan.
While navigating the regulatory process has been a challenge, the airport’s importance to Bath County’s economy and tourism industry has helped keep the project a priority. With a new terminal on the horizon, Ingalls Field is positioning itself to better serve both the aviation community and the broader public for years to come.
Stay tuned as we continue to follow this story and provide updates on the project’s timeline and next steps.
