Kenny Hiner Is The New Highland Recreation Commission Director
Monterey, VA – Highland county has a new recreation commission director who knows the area like the back of his hand. He is Kenny Hiner, who was born and raised in the county. He’s excited about his new duties.
“My goal here at the Rec Commission is to implement recreational activities for all ages and trips for all ages” says Hiner.
Mr. Hiner has years of experience coaching young people in the Highland county school system, including boys middle school and the girls varsity softball team. He’s also coached Little Leaguers. Although he has been on the job just a short while, Kenny has already started on this year’s recreation schedule. He’s already sent out T-ball registrations. Those forms are due by April 7th. Practices will begin in late April, with games in May.
“Right now I’m kinda working on an alumni Pee-Wee basketball game, about mid April” says Hiner. “The proceeds we get from that we’ll put back into the county for activities.”
More activities are planned for the summer time including the Mountain Mama road bike challenge in August, which is the recreation commission’s biggest fund raising event of the year. Kenny is looking forward to another busy season at the pool in Monterey. He is hoping for warmer weather this summer, which would bring out more swimmers. He also welcomes input from the community.
The recreation commission office is located near the Highland center and Kenny can be reached most weekdays from 8 AM to noon at 468-2978.
