Lady Chargers Win Greenbrier West Holiday Basketball Tournament

Charmco, WV – The Bath County Lady Chargers took home a first-place trophy from the Greenbrier West Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 36-32 victory against the Greenbrier West Cavaliers on December 22.

The Lady Chargers returned just two starters this year and younger players had to step up their game to bring home the championship cup. As the Cavaliers concentrated their defense on returning starters Jailyn Ford and Alexa Faraone – younger Lady Chargers stepped up their game to make it a team win.

McKayla Colaw and Jessie O’Connor led Bath County with 8 points each and Faraone netted another 7 points. Carly McQueen led Greenbrier West with eight points and Emily Osborne added 7 for the Cavaliers.

In a first-round action the day before, the Lady Chargers bested the Bluefield Beavers by a score of 44-34. Ford netted 14 in the first-round game and Faraone, 13, including two three-pointers. McKayla Lindsay and Jessie O’Connor added six points each against the Lady Beavers.

Greenbrier West earned their berth in the championship game with a first-round victory over the Lady Raiders of Liberty.

The Lady Chargers hoped to surprise the doubters this year and they’re off to a good start with a 5-4 record. The Lady Chargers host the Pocahontas County Lady Warriors in Hot Springs on January 2 at 6 p.m. The Lady Warriors have won three in a row and are 7-3 overall.
