Livestock shows bring out talented youth and animals

Monterey, Va. –

The Highland County Fair cattle and hog shows were held on Wednesday this year. The shows feature a variety of categories of competition including Showmanship and Market Animals.

In the showmanship competition, the judge is looking at several criteria including how the competitors handle their animals, how the animals react to their handler, how well the handler answers questions about their animal, and how well the animal is groomed.

Rhonda Obaugh won the Master Beef Showmanship award. Christian Herber was the winner of the Senior Beef Showmanship award for the 17 and 18 year olds and also won the overall Senior Beef Showmanship award. Katie Amirault placed first in the Senior Beef Showmanship competition for the 14 to 16 year old group. In the Junior Beef Showmanship category for 9 to 13 year olds, Sydney Armstrong placed first. In the Novice Beef Showmanship category, Michell Burns was the winner.

In the Hog Showmanship competition, Michael Humphries was the winner in the Master category. Robert Moyers was the winner in the Senior division and Grace Blanchard won the Junior division. Savannah Hevener was the winner of the novice division.

Market animals are judged by their appearance. These animals are sold and then later slaughtered. The animals are graded before the show and judged on which animal will make the best choice cuts of meat.

The Champion Market Steer award this year went to Robert Moyers. The Reserve Champion Market Steer winner was Brett Will. In the Breeding Heifers competition, Katie Amirault was winner of the Commercial Champion Heifer award and Luke Leech won the Registered Champion Heifer award. This year’s Champion Feeder Steer award went to Sydney Armstrong and the Reserve Champion Feeder Steer award winner was Rhonda Obaugh.
