Local Election Results in Pocahontas County

In an election where almost 69% of the Pocahontas County registered voters participated, Republican Commission candidate Thane Ryder defeated his Democrat opponent, Jay Miller, receiving 2,533 votes to Miller’s 1,176 votes.

In the sheriff’s race, current Chief Deputy Troy McCoy defeated businessman Kennith “Buster” Varner, 2,352 to 1,342 votes.

In the non-partisan Board of Education contest, Andrew “Frosty” McNabb, who is currently serving on the BOE since he was appointed following the resignation of Becky Campbell due to illness, was elected to serve out the rest of Campbell’s term by defeating three other candidates for that seat. McNabb received 1,803 votes, Donna Dilley received 754 votes, and Dawn Baldwin Barrett received 605 votes, and Jaryd Wilfong received 308 votes.

Those were the three contested local elections. Additionally, Laura M. Kershner, who ran unopposed for County Prosecutor, received 2,465 votes and there were 187 write-in ballots.

Johnny Pritt, who ran unopposed for Assessor, received 3,216 votes while there were 16 write-in votes case.

For the WV House of Delegates, 66th District, Republican Jonathan B. Kyle defeated Democrat Dama M. Nestor in Pocahontas County by 1,365 to 567 votes, and, including the Randolph County parts of the 66th District votes, Kyle was elected to that seat by a total vote of 4,805 votes to 2,035 for Nester.

For the WV House of Delegates, 46th District, Republican Jeff Campbell defeated Democrat Paul S. Detch in Pocahontas County by 1,172 to 509 votes, and actually won that seat by 5,704 votes to 2,308 votes for Detch when the Pocahontas County and Greenbrier County votes are combined.

For the WV State Senate, 11th District, Republican Robbie Morris defeated Democrat Mandy Smith Weirich in Pocahontas County by 2,600 to 996 votes, and actually won that seat by 31,091 votes to 9,866 votes for Weirich when the Pocahontas County and the surrounding counties 11th District votes are combined.

Additionally, in Pocahontas County, the voters voted to pass that amendment by a razer thin 1,591 to 1581 vote. Statewide, that Amendment, which prohibits medically assisted suicide passed by a vote of 326,813 to 321,177.

In Pocahontas County, there was a very good turnout for this election, with 3,918 voting out of the 5,692 registered voters, for a 68.83% turnout. Of those 3,918 who voted, 1,337 voted early at the courthouse, and 146 voted by absentee ballot.

He bought land on Droop Mountain off Jacox Road in 1976 and built a small house there in the early 80’s. While still working in Maryland, Tim spent much time at his place which is located on the Friars Hole Cave Preserve. Retiring in 2011 as a Lieutenant with the Anne Arundel County Police Department in Maryland, Tim finally took the plunge and moved from Maryland to his real home on Droop Mountain. He began working as the Pocahontas County Reporter for Allegheny Mountain Radio in January of 2015.
