Mecks Win 2012 Community Involvement Award From Pocahontas Chamber Of Commerce

Marlinton, WV – Jacob and Malinda Meck are the winners of the 2012 Community Involvement award from the Pocahontas County Chamber of Commerce. They received the award during the annual dinner on March 29th, to a standing ovation by all those gathered at the Opera House for the dinner. Jacob Meck accepted on behalf of the employees of their multi-business operation, based in Green Bank.

“I guess part of the surprise is not having time to prepare for a speech,” he says. “I did however wonder why most of my employees are here tonight; the answer is I would find out. I just want to say much thanks, and there are many things that contribute, I believe, to our success and that is the support of the communities, and our employees, and the many customers we do have in this community and I want to thank you very much for that.”

Meck credits the long established businesses in the county as a guide and incentive to keep their businesses going even in difficult times.

“We are directly across from Sheets GMC in Green Bank,” he says, “and I know many of you know Charles and Caroline Sheets. I know sometimes I have left work late at night and I have traveled across the street, knocked on Charlie’s door and said Charlie, it’s time to go home!’ And that’s what makes a business successful, it’s hanging in there, and its people like Charlie and many of you all who have been in business these many years that keep us getting up and give us the motivation to continue on, so thank you so much.”

The Meck’s were awarded not only for their involvement in their church and community, but also because their employees are also deeply involved in their communities through church and other activities such as the BFD and Cass fire departments, Shavers Fork Fire and Rescue, and the schools.

Following the presentation to the Mecks, he announced the winner of the Individual Community Involvement Award.

“This person is the eldest licensed nurse in West Virginia,” he says. “She’s began her nursing career in 1941 at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital where she still works part time. She is very involved in the hospital auxiliary, and is the co-manager of the gift shop at the hospital.”

“She is a member and very active in the Swago CEOS and very active in her church. This person has devoted her love and her entire life to the service of others; this person has such a lovely personality that is a pleasure to see her smiling face. Please join me in congratulating Mildred Music.”

Tune in for noon hour on Tuesday for more from the Chamber of Commerce dinner.
