Melissa’s Knit & Hobby Shop Opens in Hillsboro

It’s not often that a brand new business opens in a small town like Hillsboro, but one just did. Melissa’s knit and Hobby Shop is located at 37 Hill Street, Hillsboro, next to Deb Ann’s Fabrics. Melissa Totten explains why she has started a business geared towards knitters and artists.

“I wanted to knit since I was about 9 years old, and took a little mini-course at the school” said Melissa. Of course, being a kid, I lost my needles and yarn and forgot how to do it. So I started to learn how to knit 3 years ago. And about a year ago I started taking painting classes. And you had a hard time finding any yarn or paint or canvass or any of that stuff around here. And I just saw a need for it. And I thought, you know what? Something that I think I’d like to do, that I’d enjoy doing and would be a help to the people in the community here.”

So, if you knit or are into painting, what kind of products will you find in Melissa’s Knit and Hobby shop? Melissa clues us in.

“I have yarn and I have knitting needles and crochet hooks and a lot of the little things that go along with that, like the point protectors and things like that” said Melissa. “And I have paint, paint brushes and canvass, and I have the adult coloring books and I have pattern books and I have a few videos on knit and crochet and a few on painting. I’ll have embroidery thread and a lot of the things that go along with the painting and knitting and all.

The Shop opened its doors on’ Tuesday, April 5th, and the “Grand Opening” will continue each day until Saturday, April 9th. Melissa explains just what will be happening at the store during this “Grand Opening Week” including the opportunity to fill out a slip with your name and address which, at no cost to you, will be entered into a daily drawing for a product prize. Melissa.

“We’re going to have a door prize each day” Melissa said. “At the end of the day all the names in the pot go into a bigger pot for the grand door prize on Saturday- and you have your choice of a door prize that goes along with knitting and crocheting or one that goes along with painting. We’re open from 10-5 Tuesday through Friday and 10 to 2 on Saturday. And we have cookies And tea and coffee.”

Of course the biggest day of the Grand opening will be on Saturday, April 9th as Melissa explains.

“On Saturday Bill Hefner is going to be here-he is my dad- and he’s going to be bringing the guitar that they are selling chances for to raise money for the Little Levels Heritage Fair” said Melissa. “He’s going to have it here playing it and you can come and hear him play that and see the guitar.”

So, not only can you come to the grand opening of Melissa’s Knit and Hobby Shop and nibble on cookies and drink beverages, on Saturday, April 9th you can also come and enjoy music by Bill Hefner. Talking with Hillsboro’s newest entrepreneur, Melissa Totten, it is obvious that she is excited by her new business where she can combine her hobbies with her job. Melissa.

“I’m just really excited to be here” Melissa says “And just hope everybody comes by and sees what I have and if they like it and enjoy it.”

Melissa certainly does.
