Monterey Town Council Considering Plans For Extending Town Water System
Monterey, VA – Mayor Janice Warner reported to the Town Council at its meeting Thursday evening in Monterey that the new waste water treatment plant continues to perform well. Mike Isles is following up on the results of the sewer line smoke testing done last month. The storm water runoff problem at the school building has been corrected. The heavy rains this week did not create problems for the plant showing that the storm water entry issues are being addressed and the steps so far completed have reduced the amount of water reaching the plant. Mayor Warner goes on to talk about a new grant opportunity.
“As you know we have applied for a grant from the Health department to do that study on extending that line or putting a tank up” says Warner.
Warner says the Health dept spokesperson told her the money for the grant will not be avail until January, but they feel confident that the grant will be approved. This grant will fund the engineering study on extending the town water system out to Airport Terrace Road.
The Council is looking at options to treat Mill Alley during snowy and icy weather. Mike Isles will pursue that question and report back at the next meeting. In other business, the Council considered a request from the Highland County Chamber of Commerce to close that street during the 2011 Maple Festival .
There were no complaints to the Council last year when Mill Alley was closed during Maple Festival. A motion to approve the Chamber’s request was passed by the Council.
The next meeting of the Monterey Town Council will be Thursday, January 6 at 7:30 PM at the Highland Public Library.
