Mountain Mama Bike Races Travel in Highland, Pocahontas and Pendleton August 1st

This Saturday, August 1^st will see the return of the Annual Mountain Mama Road Bike Challenge. Cyclists will try their metal on one of four grueling courses ranging from 27 miles in length to a 100 mile loop that covers two states and three counties.  With dozens of cycling enthusiasts taking to the roads in portions of Highland, Pendleton, and Pocahontas Counties, drivers are cautioned to stay alert and be aware of slower moving traffic as they share the road.

The challenge begins 8 a.m. Saturday Morning at the Highland County High School and will impact the following routes throughout the day…

• S. Hwy 250 eastbound between Monterey and Headwaters
• S. Hwy 220 northbound between Vanderpool, Monterey, and Forks of the Waters and southbound from the Pendleton Business Center to Harper
• 614 Cowpasture River Road North between Headwaters & Sugar Grove
• 25 Moyer’s Gap Road between Sugar Grove and Sandy Ridge Road
• Sandy Ridge Road down and through Thorn Creek Road to Hwy 220
• 17 Snowy Mountain Road from Harper to Cherry Grove
• Hwy 28 southbound between Cherry Grove and Thornwood
• US Hwy 250 eastbound between Thornwood and Monterey
• 642 and 640 along Bluegrass Valley Road from Forks of the Water to Hightown and along Meadowdale Rd to Meadowdale

and

• Hwy 84 Mill Gap Rd from Meadowdale to Vanderpool

In addition to the cyclists themselves, sheriff’s deputies and volunteers will be traveling the routes offering assistance to cyclists in need. Highland County Sheriff Bob Kelly advises motorists to remain courteous and obey all applicable traffic laws, while noting that the bridge construction along US Hwy 220 just north of Monterey has been taken into account and traffic light cycles will provide plenty of time for motorists to make it through at a safe, slow pace.
