OK Kids! It’s Time To Sign Up For Camp Horseshoe!!
Marlinton, Wv – Laura Young is the Executive Director of the Pocahontas County Family Resource Network. One of her favorite tasks is coordinating youth participation in Camp Horseshoe.
“Camp Horseshoe is located in Parsons WV and is just on the other side of Elkins” says Young. “Every year, Pocahontas County gets 10 to 20 scholarships where we can take our children for free to this camp. This is a really wonderful opportunity for our kids. They’re going to teach them some leadership skills, how to swim, they’re going to do some nature hikes and backpacking; it’s for boys and girls both.”
Young says that the scholarships are designed for children from low income families but everyone is welcome at Camp.
“Any child between the ages of 7 and 12” she says. “The scholarships are designed for low income families, but we don’t want any child to be turned away. If your child wants to go to camp, give me a call and we’ll work it out.”
“The Marlinton Rotary Club can probably help with some of the expenses, and of course Snowshoe Foundation, and there are other benevolent individuals in the county who have told me that if a child really wants to go to camp, they’ll help me make that happen. We don’t want to see anybody turned away.”
Young says that thanks to the Snowshoe Foundation, she’ll be taking a school bus to the July 17th to the 23rd session. She’ll be staying all week with the kids.
“We’ll go in on a Sunday sometime between 2 and 4 and we’ll come out the following Saturday right after breakfast” says Young. “What we’re planning to do is starting over in Hillsboro on Sunday afternoon and picking up the kids in the Hillsboro area; then we’ll come down to Marlinton Elementary and pick up the kids in Marlinton; then we’ll take the bus over to Green Bank and pick up those kids that want to go.”
Young summarizes the Camp Horseshoe experience.
“Camp Horseshoe is designed to be a safe place for the kids to learn how to swim” she says. “They’re going to be doing some reading exercises. They’ll have 3 family style meals a day, and they’ll also have campfires every evening. They let the kids play ball and it’s really a fun place to be.”
