Part Two – 7-23-24 BOE Meeting Story

The following is Part 2 of our July 23rd Pocahontas County Board of Education Meeting story. in Part 1 of this story, we covered Kristi Hamons’ school technology updates, and Tracey Valach’s update on Adventure Pocahontas. Now we will present the other information and actions taken at this meeting.

School Superintendent Lynne Bostic talked about the schools’ very successful information booth at Pioneer Days, praising those who assisted with it.

Sherri Radcliff told the members that the recently conducted state financial audit of the schools was recently received and it reflected well on the school system.

The board members approved the routine financial reports, and approved 34 revised Neola Policies. Bostic explained all of those were very minor revisions.

They approved contracts with Leslie Goodall, Occupational Therapist, and with School Psychologist Carrie Bowers for the upcoming school year.

They approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Glenville State University about field placements; internships, student teaching and residency; an agreement with New River Community and Technical College regarding dual-credit courses at PCHS; and a MOU with The North Central WV Community Action Association, Inc. regarding Head Start.

The members also approved the use of the Restricted Substitute Waiver which will allow for the use of additional substitute teachers this coming school year, and they entered into a District Agreement with the Communities in Schools Program for the coming school year.

The members also authorized the schools to enter into a MOU with Community Care of WV to provide medical care in the schools; a MOU with the WV Family Nutrition Program to provide nutrition and physical activity programs in the schools; and they approved the Snack Agreement Addendum with the WV Department of Education’s National School Lunch Program.

Regarding the purchase of food for the schools this coming school year, the members approved the following bids.

  • A roll-over bid from United Dairy
  • A roll-over bid from Tri-County Wholesale Produce
  • A roll-over bid from Flowers Bakery Company.
  • A bid from the Mountain Steer Meat company.
  • And they agreed to remain in an agreement with the Country Roads Cooperative regarding a successful bid with Gordon Food Service.

In another meal related decision, the board members increased the price of staff and guest meals from $2.50 to $3.00 for breakfasts and from $4.25 to $5.00 for lunch this coming year.

As required by the state, they approved the following 2024-2025 sports gender classifications.

  • The boys’ sports will be: baseball; basketball; soccer; and track & field.
  • The girls’ sports will be: softball; basketball; soccer; and track & field.
  • And the Co-Ed sports will be: band; cheerleading; football; and golf.

Before ending the meeting, the members approved the recommended personnel actions, among which there were several notable hires

  • Nichole Rose Taylor was selected to be the next Principal at PCHS, effective august 1st;
  • Owen Vogelsong was hired to be the PE/Health Teacher at PCHS
  • Doug Burns was hired to be the Varsity Football Coach
  • Matthew Buzzard was hired to be the Assistant Varsity Football Coach
  • John Snyder was hired to be the Assistant Girls Basketball Coach at PCHS
  • And Andrew Landers was hired as the Guidance Counselor at Green Bank Elementary/Middle School.

Tim is the WVMR News Reporter. Tim is a native of Maryland who started coming to Pocahontas County in the 1970’s as a caver. He bought land on Droop Mountain off Jacox Road in 1976 and built a small house there in the early 80’s. While still working in Maryland, Tim spent much time at his place which is located on the Friars Hole Cave Preserve. Retiring in 2011 as a Lieutenant with the Anne Arundel County Police Department in Maryland, Tim finally took the plunge and moved from Maryland to his real home on Droop Mountain. He began working as the Pocahontas County Reporter for Allegheny Mountain Radio in January of 2015.
