Pocahontas BOE Sets Superintendent & Board Of Education Goals for This School Year

There was a special meeting of the Pocahontas County BOE on Thursday, September 11, 2025. At that meeting the board made the following board assignments for its members:

  • Sam Gibson was assigned to represent the board on the Extension Service
  • Morgan McComb was assigned to the Conference of Educational Facilities Plan (CEFP)
  • Sue Hollandsworth was assigned to the Strategic Plan
  • And emery Grimes was assigned to the Day Report; the FFA; and to the Safety Committee.

The members also assigned the following goals for this school year to the Superintendent:

  • Operational compacity will improve system-wide to address all non-compliance indicators from the special Circumstance Review for Special Education.
  • The schools will engage parents and community members in opportune ities to acquire information, knowledge, and skills to support their students’ overall education and behavior at school and at home.
  • During the 25-26 school year, the number of chronically absent students will decrease by 50% with no school showing less than a 10% reduction.
  • During the 25-26 school year all outdated policies and job descriptions will be updated to align state code and WV Board of Education policies.
  • All schools will meet annual growth targets for ELA and Math as measured by the end of year assessments.

Each of these goals included specific action steps to be taken to accomplish them.

The board members also assigned themselves the following goals for this school year:

  1. Strengthen the board’s focus on student success and community engagement by requiring each school’s Local School Improvement Council (LSIC) to present three reports throughout the year highlighting progress in achievement, attendance, and discipline.
  2. Collaborate with the superintendent to launch a proactive media campaign designed to enhance the district’s public image at both the local and state levels.
  3. Implement and expand a system of positive reinforcement by recognizing staff and students quarterly at board meetings for achievements such as perfect attendance.
  4. Bolster and expand CTE pathway options to encourage and promote college and career readiness.

Following these, the board adjourned the special meeting.

Tim is the WVMR News Reporter. Tim is a native of Maryland who started coming to Pocahontas County in the 1970’s as a caver. He bought land on Droop Mountain off Jacox Road in 1976 and built a small house there in the early 80’s. While still working in Maryland, Tim spent much time at his place which is located on the Friars Hole Cave Preserve. Retiring in 2011 as a Lieutenant with the Anne Arundel County Police Department in Maryland, Tim finally took the plunge and moved from Maryland to his real home on Droop Mountain. He began working as the Pocahontas County Reporter for Allegheny Mountain Radio in January of 2015.
