Pocahontas County Math Field Day 2012

Dunmore, WV – It’s an annual tradition in Pocahontas County – bring the best and most diligent math students to the county high school to compete head on in a variety of math skills. Originally scheduled for January 24th, the competition was bumped to the 25th due to a weather related school delay. Students in grades 4 through 9 participated in the competition.

Ruth Bland, Director of Special Education and student services for the county schools welcomed the kids.

“On behalf of Superintendent CC Lester and Director of Curriculum Mr. Terrence Beam, I want to congratulate all of you for being here today,” says Bland. “Just by coming to math field day that means you are one of the top students in math in your school!”

Although she stepped down as Pocahontas Board of Education Vice President on January 25th, Leslie Cain was on hand as a Board representative to hand out the awards.

The winners are Micheal McGee, 4th grade from MES, and Colton Massey, 5th grade from HBES. The winners in grade 6 through 8 are all from MMS – Briar Wilfong, 6th grade, Ryan Puffenbarger, 7th grade, and Jacob Hefner, 8th grade. Vincent Harper is the winner for the ninth grade from PCHS.

First, second and third place finishers will go on to the regional RESA 4 regional math field day on March 30th at the Lewisburg campus of New River Community and Technical College. If the top three finishers can’t make it, the alternates can go in their stead.

A team of 10 students from grades 10 the 12 at PCHS will be selected to compete in the RESA 4 regional competition on March 23rd at WV Tech. Thanks to Geoff Hamill for the information in this report.
