Pocahontas County Multi-Purpose Community Center To Go Out To Bid Soon

Marlinton, WV – Dale Withrow of the Chapman Group, told the Pocahontas County Board of Education that the construction of the new Pocahontas County multi-purpose community center is about to begin. He says they had a pre-bid meeting with 6 general contractors that are interested in the project. He’s worked with 5 of the 6 on various projects throughout the state. Withrow then told the Board about the next step in the process.

“We’ll have the bid opening on the 27th,” he says, “[at] 1:30, it will be in the Parks and Rec Board Office. It’s an open bid, public opening with these companies. I don’t think it’s going to take us long to make a selection.”

He says they are finalizing details and will officially put out the bid on Thursday the 22nd.

Board President Kenneth Vance asked Withrow when construction will start. Withrow says they expect to start moving material onto the site in early October. That material will compact over the winter and actual construction will start in the spring.

Superintendant CC Lester informed the Board that Green Bank science teacher Ann Smith had submitted a grant application to Dominion Power for $3,700.00 for science projects. That grant was approved but for $5,000.00. The money will be presented in a ceremony at Green Bank on Friday at 1pm.

Lester also told the Board that the search for a Food Service Coordinator has been successfully completed. He announced that Cheri Hall of RESA IV has been hired in that position and will start on the 20th.

BOE student representative Chloe Bland tells the Board about next weeks homecoming activities.

“Homecoming is next week,” says Bland. “This year’s theme is Wild With Pride’. On Monday you can wear a hat as long as you bring in a can of food to donate, and the Junior Committee will donate that food to the Pocahontas Food Pantry. Tuesday is Career Day, Wednesday is Decades or Animal Print Day, Thursday is Camo day and of course Friday is Maroon and Gold Day.”

“Our attendants and escorts are as follows: for Freshman, Corinne Airgood, & James Campbell, Sophomore is Jennifer Fertig and Wesley Felton, Junior is Claire Mosesso and Steven Castro and Seniors are Chastin Taylor and Jesse Taylor. Our Queen candidates are Chelsea Walker, Sara Jonese and McKenzie Cochran. King candidates are Curtis Pyles, Skylar Knisely, and Ian Wiley.”
