Pocahontas County Warrior Football Kicks Off 2011 Season August 26th Against Tucker County

Dunmore, WV – I found Head Coach Mike Knisley of Pocahontas County High School Warrior football team at the gym amid drawings of plays and reviewing some film on a lap top computer. I asked the Coach if the Warriors are ready.

“We’re pretty healthy at this point in time and what I told the kids last night, we’ve done all we can to prepare through the month of August as coaches getting them ready to play and they have to go out and perform” he says. “Tucker County is a good team, they’re a perennial playoff team, so we’re not starting off with any cream puff by no means. So we’ve got to go out, limit mistakes, especially turnovers, and defensively not allow any big plays. Make them earn whatever they get. And if we’re able to do those things then I feel pretty good about our chances to win.”

I ask Coach if he would share any of his offensive plans or did he prefer to keep them under his hat.

“It’s the same thing we always do” he says. “We don’t reinvent the wheel here, it’s the same thing we’ve done in the past. We may try to throw a little bit at times; a little bit more play action stuff. But we’re a running football team; we’re gonna come out, we’re gonna give you a bunch of different looks and we’re going to try to run the football; because I’m a firm believer that’s how you win football games and control the tempo of the game.”
“Defensively, again we just got to try to control their big plays, especially in the passing game. If we’re able to do those things, I feel pretty good that we’ve got a chance to win.”

At the Meet the Team night, I asked Principal Tom Sanders for his view of the opening game of the 2011 campaign.

“I’m really hoping that we can get a good turn out for that Tucker County game” says Sanders. “Tucker County always has a good team and it’s a tough game to open up with. I went over to Tucker County High School last year and they had a real big crowd over there so I’m hoping we can return them a favor and have a big crowd over here yelling for our kids.”

Come out and cheer the Warriors as they play Tucker County at the Pocahontas County football field Friday, August 26th; kickoff is at 7:30pm. If you can’t make the game, WVMR-FM 91.9FM will carry the game live. Join Toney Minter and Bob Sheets with all the action, starting at 7:15pm.
