Pocahontas County Wellness Center’s “February Fit Fest”

Lauren Bennett, Director of the Pocahontas County Recreation and Parks explains that the Wellness Center in Marlinton is sponsoring a special promotion called the “February Fit Fest”. This is designed to help those who made a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight and get in shape who may now be wavering on that resolution to be able to get going again.

Lauren explains that part of the promotion involves a 20% discount for the use of the fitness room, which is the only part of the Wellness Center which involves membership fees. This means that the regular price of $25.00 per month for an individual to use the fitness center will be reduced to $20.00 during the February Fit Fest, and the normal $35.00 family monthly rate will only be $28.00 during the February promotion. The Fitness Room includes aerobic machines such as treadmills, bicycles, ellipticals and weight-lifting equipment. There will also be a new weightlifting class starting soon.

“We have a beginner weightlifting class that will start on Friday,” said Lauren. “It’s geared to middle school/high school kids who just want to start learning about weight lifting.”

The Wellness Center also includes a racket ball court and a gymnasium which are open for both after school programs as well as for families in the evenings.

There are some special events coming up at the Wellness Center this month as part of the Fitness Fest.

“This Saturday we have a square dance up at Dunmore,” said Lauren. “On February 22nd, which is a Sunday afternoon, we’ll have a special Zumba Power Party, you can come and do two and a half hours of Zumba with some special prize giveaways. And then on February 28th we are doing a dodge ball tournament here at the Wellness Center, so we hope folks get their teams together and come out for that, we tried one in the fall and it was a lot of fun.”

During the fit Fest promotion, all of the classes are free for the first two weeks, and some, like the Square Dancing will continue to be free. They are offering some other new classes.

“We are also offering some more new morning exercise classes,” said Lauren, “Tuesday mornings we will have a new Yoga class, Wednesdays will be Trim, tone and Strengthen, Thursday will be ‘Life’s Moves. Both Wednesday’s and Thursdays classes are strengthening and some exercises that don’t involve weights but things that just involve your body, so things you can learn here and go home and do in your living room. And we are doing some Spin Samplers just so the folks can try it. It is good exercise so we’ll do some short classes where they can just get a sample of it.”

To assist you in getting started, there will be some expert help.

“We do have an Exercise Physiologist who is on board, Paula Zorn,” said Lauren. “As part of the membership you can come and meet with her and she will help you put together a plan so that you aren’t just going in starting blind, if you need somebody to sit down with you figure out your goals and then help you set a plan for a work-out, she’s here to do that.”

Again, this month the Pocahontas County Recreation and Parks is offering the February Fit Fest at the Wellness Center in Marlinton. This involves special classes and discounts on membership to the Fitness room.

As Director Lauren Bennett says “We just hope that folks will come and find what fits them in the fitness room and come have some fun.”
