Pocahontas Warrior Head Football Coach Mike Knisely Has High Expectations For Football Team This Year

Dunmore, WV – I caught up with Head Coach Mike Knisely of the Pocahontas County High School football team. The Coach had just finished outlining the afternoon’s activities. I asked him about his first impressions of this years’ team.

“We’re in pretty good shape” he says, “overall lifting, we tested out yesterday, the kids that had worked, a core group of 18 to 20 of the upper c lassmen, you could see that they’ve worked since last year; made some great gains. Overall running-wise we’re in pretty good shape. We’re having to deal with the heat here this week being up in the 90’s, which is a little unusual for around here, so we’re being careful from that aspect; but overall the kids are in pretty good shape, and they’re coming in and ready to go.”

I asked the coach about his expectations for this season.

“We always have high expectations” says Knisely. “We’ve been to the playoffs 5 of the last 7 years; our kids have high expectations, and they show it through their work ethic. Anymore football is not just you show up August 1st and you get ready for the season. We got kids in the weight room, even kids that are playing other sports, find the time to get into the weight room preparing for football season all year round.”

“The reason they do that is they want to have success, they want to be successful on Friday nights through the fall. So of course our expectations are we want to have a winning season, we want to win our conference, the Potomac Valley Conference. We want to make the state playoffs. We want to be able to host a playoff game if you’re in the Top 8.”

“And the ultimate goal, as we’ve talked, we want to win the state championships. You don’t just do all this work and say we can’t win that, but we can do all these other things’; you talk about the ultimate goal. That’s what everybody should do in their sports.”
