Retiring Highland County Sheriff, Two Supervisors Honored During Highland Sups December Meeting

Monterey, VA – A total of sixty-six years of service to Highland County by three county officials was the featured item on the agenda at yesterday evening’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Supervisor David Blanchard was master of ceremonies for the presentations. The first was to Sheriff Herb Lightner.

“This is presented to Herbert R. Lightner by the County of Highland , Virginia in appreciation of 30 years, 6 months of dedicated and exemplary service to county government as Deputy Sheriff and Sheriff of Highland County,” says Blanchard. “Deputy Sheriff July 1, 1981 [to] December 31st, 1987; Sheriff January 1, 1988 [to] December 31st, 2011.”

Sheriff Lightner thanked the Board members for their cooperation.

“We’ve really worked well together as a group with Melissa; you know Roberta is a great asset and you all,” says Lightner. “I just feel honored and privileged to have served this long and provide my family with a living here in Highland County.”

The next presentation was to Supervisor Jerry Rexrode.

“So this is to Mr. Rexrode from the County of Highland, Virginia in appreciation of 16 years of dedicated and exemplary service to county government as a member of the Highland County Board of Supervisors, January 1, 1996 [to] December 31st, 2011,” says Blanchard.

“I’ve enjoyed it,” says Rexrode. “Like I’ve always said they need different people on different boards and that happens. Hope I’ve done some good for the county.”

The final presentation was to Supervisor Robin Sullenberger.

“This is to Don Robin Sullenberger, III by the County of Highland, Virginia in appreciation of 20 years of dedicated and exemplary service to county government as a member of the Highland County Board of Supervisors, January 1, 1992 [to] December 31st, 2011,” says Blanchard.

“I always tend to say more than I need to say, so I’m just going to say it has generally been an honor to serve Highland County and I do appreciate it, thank you,” says Sullenberger.

Stay tuned later this week for the results of the vote by the Supervisors and Town Council on the county comprehensive plan. The next regular meeting of the Highland County Board of Supervisors will be Tuesday, January 3, 2012.
