Shooting Victim Accused of Assisting, Abetting Suspect On The Run
The table has turned for a Monterey woman, who last month told deputies her boyfriend shot at her multiple times as she sat in her car.
Once a victim, now a suspect, Sherry E. Wolfe, age 57, was arrested June 28th and charged in connection with her alleged actions after the May 10th shooting involving her accused boyfriend, Charles “Chuck” H. Smith.
Wolfe is charged with a misdemeanor count of accessory after the fact for assisting and giving comfort to Smith after knowing he had committed a felony, according to Highland County Sheriff Bob Kelly.
Wolfe faces three additional misdemeanor charges, including two counts of making a false statement to a law enforcement officer and one count of misleading a law enforcement agency, Kelly added.
After her arrest, Wolfe appeared before a court magistrate and was released on an unsecured $5,000 bond.
Kelly said Wolfe is accused of lying to investigators and assisting Smith during his 44 days on the run from deputies following the shooting.
“She wasn’t cooperating and interfered with our ability to make an arrest,” Kelly said. “She knew his whereabouts and never told us. She said she didn’t know where he was but she knew. She led us down the wrong path.”
Smith, age 55, was arrested June 23 at his Monterey home by Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshal investigators, ending his 44-day run from the law. He was charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Smith is being held without bond at the Middle River Regional Jail.
The shooting incident occurred around 9 a.m. on May 10th after Smith argued with Wolfe, who fled in her car, heading east on Route 250 from Monterey.
Smith reportedly gave chase and the argument continued after Wolfe stopped in the Crab Run area. There, Smith is accused of damaging Wolfe’s car before firing multiple shots at her as she sat in her car.
Wolfe, who narrowly escaped injury, fled in her car and called 911 to report the shooting.
Kelly said the investigation into Wolfe’s alleged actions after the shooting is continuing. Asked if she faces the possibility of additional charges, Kelly replied, “Oh, we’re not done with her yet.”
