#112 – Smoked Salmon Appetizer

#112 – Smoked Salmon Appetizer

This is recipe Roundup, episode 112. This weeks recipe is one that my family makes several times a year at family gatherings or parties. It’s super easy and quick while being a little bit on the fancier side. This salmon recipe is also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Smoked Salmon comes in many different forms and flavors and each has it’s purpose. For this recipe, however, we are going to opt for the hot smoked salmon – it’s more solid and flaky and you can usually find it in a large chunk at the store, rather than in thin slices like lox or cold smoked varieties.

The other two ingredients are cream cheese and red onion and some capers if you like them. The resulting spread is excellent on crackers and bread alike.

Now,you could definitely take these three ingredients and mix them all together and it would be fine! But I recommend stacking them instead.

To prep, make sure the smoked salmon and cream cheese is nice and chilled, and finely dice your red onion – you can also use green onions for a much more mellow flavor – or even ramps if you have them handy! Place the block of cream cheese on a serving plate or dish then press your diced onions into the top in a nice and even layer. Finally, top with the whole chunk of smoked salmon and garnish with capers and a squirt of lemon. The layers can be easily cut through with a cheese or butter knife and spread on crackers! Enjoy!
