#5 – French Toast and a Salad Tip!

#5 – French Toast and a Salad Tip!

Served as Breakfast in Bed, this classic makes a great Valentine’s meal and gift!

French Toast (per serving)

Ingredients:

3 slices of bread

1 egg

1/4 cup milk

(optional) dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and vanilla  – you can experiment with different flavorings, spices, or even food dye for festive occasions!

Directions:

  1. Decide what kind of bread you are going to use and how much you need: Are you going to use whatever bread you have around, or go out and get a baguette specifically for this purpose. Strong breads that can withstand a good amount of moisture before falling apart, like sourdough, are great. Breads with a lot of butter in them, like brioche are extra delicious. You can experiment with flavored breads as well, like cinnamon raisin bread – YUM! 3 pieces of bread per person is a good serving estimate.
  2. Beat egg(s) and milk together until completely combined.
  3. If desired, mix in a dash of sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or food dye completely.
  4. Heat a skillet on medium/high heat and add a little bit of butter to melt.
  5. Dunk each individual slice of bread into the egg wash, making sure to cover all surfaces well without letting the wash sop all the way to the center of the bread.
  6. Fry piece of toast on each side until golden, cooking the egg wash completely.
  7. Enjoy with berries, jam, powdered sugar, whipped cream, chocolate spread, or maple syrup.

Valentines Salad Tip: If you’re planning on serving a salad with your Valentine’s meal, add some strawberries! Strawberries, cut in half lengthwise, look like little hearts! They go very well with goat cheese, feta, chicken, almonds, and a sweet poppy seed dressing or balsamic vinaigrette.
