The 2023 Highland County Fair Opens Wednesday Evening August 30
The Highland County Fair opens Wednesday evening, August 30. The fair parade begins at 6pm and following that, the fair is underway.
Holli McVeigh has lots of information on the fair. She is the Secretary for the Highland County Fair Association.
“We have a lot of new fun events this year,” says McVeigh. “We have Spencer Hatcher, he is a country bluegrass singer. He will be performing after the parade on Wednesday at 7:30. We have The Crestmen, who are gospel performers. They’ll be performing before the Derby on Thursday from 4 to 6. After the Kiddie Show on Friday, we have a magician, Brandon Owen. He will be performing twice at 12:30 and again at 3pm. We have a new interactive exhibit thanks to Blue Ridge Community College. They are bringing their Transportation and Logistics Simulation Trailer. That’s where you can drive a tractor trailer and heavy equipment such as bulldozers, excavators and bucket loaders. And, of course, let’s not forget we are bringing back the fireworks this year. We have two nights of fireworks. They’ll be Wednesday for Family Night and Saturday night as the finale. They’ll start at 10 o’clock each night.”
On Wednesday, August 30, at 12 noon, the 4-H & FFA Sheep and Goats Livestock Show will be held at the Livestock Show Barn and following that will be the Lamb & Goat Pet Contest.
You can learn more about all the events at the fair by picking up a Fair Guide that is available at most stores in Highland County. Information is also available on the Facebook page, Highland County Fair Virginia, and on the website, highlandcountyfairva.com
“So, by far the most popular event is the Demolition Derby,” says McVeigh. “So much so, that we are having two nights of it. Thursday night, which is the regular stock cars, and then on Friday will be modified cars. Both of those start at 7pm. Other popular events are the Dog Show at 9 am on Saturday and, of course, the Truck Pull. That’s going to start at 5pm this year on Saturday. All of our events are a great time, the Kiddie Show, Cornhole Board Contest, the Parade, the Livestock Costume Contest, the student events. We have some of the best food, I think. So, we’ve got a lot of good stuff going on.”
The Highland County Fair runs from Wednesday evening, August 30, through Saturday, September 2.
