Pull any kiddo that’s lived in Highland County for more than a year aside and ask them what their favorite part of summer is, and you’re likely to get the same answer:

“The Fair!”

The Highland County Fair is August 24 and 28-31 this year and all planning is underway for it to be a giant success.

This is the 73rd year for the Highland County Horse Show, which will begin at 9 a.m. on August 24. The show has events for all ages, including the popular costume category. Participants will take home ribbons for 1st – 6th place and paybacks for 1st – 4th place. This is an all-day event with a short break for lunch. Food will be available on the fairgrounds.

The carnival rides roll into town and will be ready to ride on August 28. Wednesday is family night with reduced $6 “Ride All Night” wristbands beginning right after the parade down Spruce St. and Myers-Moon Road. Thursday through Friday, rides will be open at 6:30 p.m. with $20 “Ride All Night” wristbands. Saturday offers $10 matinee wristbands good from 1-5 p.m., then $20 “Ride All Night” wristbands beginning at 6 p.m.

There are some new acts and events this year at the fair, Wednesday Jack & Davis Reid, country music enthusiasts and grandsons of The Statler Brothers, will be performing under the big tent at 7:30 p.m. Skyhigh Skyler, a professional stilt walker, and Lindsay Grant’s Cowgirl Circus will both be performing roaming shows every day of the fair. Thursday at 4 p.m. under the big tent the southern gospel harmony of The Crest Men will fill the air.

Get ready for an adrenaline-packed evening of rodeo action on Friday at 7 p.m. with Bullride Mania in the grandstands. There will be Youth Mutton Bustin (Ages 4-6, under 60 lbs), Youth Stick Horse Racing (Ages 12 and younger), Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, and Women’s Breakaway (Calf Roping). There is no registration needed for the youth events until the day of the events.

And for closing night, Highland County born and raised country music act Cameron Simmons is under the big tent from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday.

Fan favorites will also be returning this year including the Demolition Derby on Thursday evening, the Saturday afternoon cornhole tournament, Saturday evening Truck, Tractor, and Diesel Truck Pull Contest, and fireworks late Saturday night to end the fair.
