The Mon Forest Presents “Travels with Darley” at Opera House August 11th

In her July Ranger’s Report, The Monongahela National Forest’s Marlinton/White Sulphur District Ranger, Cynthia Sandeno tells our listeners about a very special, free and fun event for the whole family that the Forest will be presenting at the Opera house in Marlinton on August 11th from 5 pm until around 9:15 pm.

“Last summer, the Emmy Award-winning host Darley Newman came to West Virginia” said Ranger Sandeno. “Darley travels with local people to experience the history, food, music, and art of exciting locations and she produces a TV show that airs on PBS called, “Travels with Darley.”  During her time in West Virginia, she filmed two episodes.  The first was on the Monongahela National Forest and the second was all about the amazing outdoor adventures that are available in West Virginia, many of which are found in Pocahontas County.  She visited Cranberry Glades, the Highland Scenic Highway, Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Cass Railroad, the Green Bank Observatory, and more.

To celebrate the release of these episodes, the Forest and our partners are hosting a community celebration – “Travels with Darley – Exploring Wild and Wonderful West Virginia” on August 11th at the Pocahontas County Opera House.

The event is free and is going to be awesome!  From 5 to 7 pm, we will have a variety of booths with hands-on activities for all ages.  You’ll have a chance to see live snakes, make a seed bomb, explore the galaxy, learn about red spruce, listen to old time music, and so much more.  It’s going to be a blast!  And, the Women’s Club will be there with their world famous kettle corn for purchase.

After the activity booths, we will bring the event inside.  Beginning at 7:00, we will be showing both of the Travels with Darley episodes that feature West Virginia beginning.  Everyone is invited!

Following the episodes, we will have an ice cream social.  That’s right, live snakes, a celebration of West Virginia, and ice-cream all in one place!  The ice-cream will be provided by The Last Run Restaurant in Cass.

We will end the event with a chance for folks to meet Darley Newman and ask questions of her, as well as local residents that are featured in the TV show.  Ever wondered what it was like to be on TV?  Feel free to ask them.

The event will wrap up around 9:15 or so, and we would love to see to see you there.  You can stop in for just the activity booths or to watch the episodes, or you are welcome to stay for the whole event.

Don’t forget – “Travels with Darley –Exploring Wild and Wonderful West Virginia” – August 11th at the Pocahontas County Opera House beginning at 5:00 pm.
