The Snowshoe Foundation’s Treasure on the Mountain Event Part 1
On Saturday, August 3rd, the staff of Allegheny Mountain Radio will climb to a height of 4,848 feet above sea level to do our second live remote from Snowshoe Village during the Treasure on the Mountain event, which is a fundraiser for The Snowshoe Foundation. To learn more about the Foundation, and the event, we spoke with –
“Dave Black, I’m, the Executive Director of The Snowshoe Foundation, and we’re the ones that put on the Treasure on the Mountain event every year.”
“The Foundation is actually in our 21st year now, we’re a nonprofit 5013 ( c ). Our offices are at the Snowshoe ski resort, but we are, you know, a separate entity from Snowshoe, and we raise money every year and give it away in the community in the form of grants and scholarships to local students. Our mission is to really just support local communities and try and improve the quality of life for the residents in these communities.”
“To date, the Foundation has raised, and thus given away, about $5 million for the last 21 years and every year we have been able to rachet that up and raise more money and give more back to the communities. We have funded everything from community parks, to projects of libraries, local sports teams we’ve sponsored, we’ve provided equipment for local schools, physics labs – basically if it’s a need in the community, from a school or another nonprofit, and it really supports residents of that community, then you’re open to apply for grants, and there’s a good chance that you would get some funding from the foundation. We really go very wide in terms of the things that we try and support.”
“And we also give away scholarships to high school students. They’re not just for college, they can be for trade schools, technical schools, and what have you. So we have a process every spring where you can apply, very simple application, and get some scholarship money to help you continue your education.”
“So we take all of these things together, really try and raise the bar in local communities. We try and support very holistically out of a family environment and support a wide variety of different things.”
AMR was the recipient of one such grant last year to replace some aging desktop computers used for production and programming.
“You know, Allegheny Mountain Radio is a great example of a community resource that is valuable, and touches a lot of different people, so we were very happy to support that grant.”
Mr. Black explained the application process.
“So basically, anything that you need to learn or do to interact with the Foundation can be found at our website, which is www.snowshoefoundation.org. You can also call us here, but again, most of the info is out there. We have a grant process in the fall and we have another grant cycle that opens in the spring, and we have a scholarship cycle that’s open in the spring. So pretty much, most of the year, you know, we’re involved in giving away money in some sort or another. The applications and the instructions are always posted on our website as well as information to contact us. So again, www.snowshoefoundation.org should answer most any questions that you have.”
