Theatre Workshops for Area Youth Set for November 11 in Monterey

The Highland County Arts Council is continuing its arts education program by providing theatre workshops for area youth.    The next workshops are scheduled for Saturday, November 11.

Brit Chambers is the Vice-President of the Highland County Arts Council and she helps with the workshops.

“We are doing two workshops back-to-back,” says Chambers.  “We are partnering with The Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro to do these.  So, teaching artists from The Wayne will come in.  From 10am to noon, we will do a Stage Blood Chemistry Workshop and then from 1 to 3pm we will be doing an Improv Workshop.  Kids are welcome to do just one or they can do both and bring a lunch and stay during that time.”

The workshops are free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the Highland County Arts Council.

“Our Stage Blood Chemistry Workshop will bring in a lot of science,” says Chambers.  “Kids will be able to mix up different bloods that are good for the stage and screen.  Everything from something that would look really good for a pretend stab wound on the stage to, you know, if something needed to splash onto the stage.  There are different types of blood products that are used for that and that’s what we’re going to have the teaching artist from The Wayne teach us.”

The Arts Council is planning more theatre workshops that will start in January.

“Arts education is extremely important in overall education,” says Chambers.  “There have been many studies to link art education to science scores, to math scores.  Especially things like our Improv Theatre Workshop will help kids think quickly on their feet and help them come up with answers.  I really want kids to know that there is a place for them in theatre, whether it’s in front of an audience or behind the scenes.  So, we are blending kind of both of those types of workshops together specifically on November 11, but also through all of the different variations of this program that we will be providing throughout 2024.”

The Stage Blood Chemistry Workshop and the Improv Workshop are Saturday, November 11, at The Highland Center in Monterey.

Registration is important, so enough materials will be available.  Register by Tuesday, November 7.
