Town of Marlinton Looking for AmeriCorps Vista Volunteer

The Town of Marlinton, a quaint, small town located along the Greenbrier River and the 78-mile Greenbrier River Trail, is recruiting a Recreation Economy Coordinator Americorps VISTA Volunteer. The newly finished “Discovery Junction” pavilion along with the Historic Pocahontas County Opera House offer numerous community events and musical performances in the heart of downtown Marlinton.

Recreation opportunities abound in and around Marlinton. As a participant currently in The Hub’s Communities of Achievement Program (HubCAP) and upcoming participant in The Hub’s Downtown Appalachia: Revitalizing Recreational Economies (DARRE), this project will increase capacity within the Town of Marlinton to continue vital community and development activities as it builds a thriving local economy based in the many outdoor resources in the area.

The Town of Marlinton Recreation Economy Coordinator (REC) VISTA will work toward this vision by serving as a liaison between the Town of Marlinton and multiple community partners to build a sustainable recreation economy by promoting the town as a top- tier recreation destination within the Snowshoe Highlands Area IMBA Ride Center. With supervisor support, the VISTA will build capacity for the town by facilitating community engagement efforts; creating and implementing systems for project tracking; coordinating events and activities to promote the outdoors to people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences; actively seek out opportunities for implementing priority projects aligned with the town’s comprehensive plan; and assisting with grant writing.

Together, the community is working with partners to contribute to a community in which nature, visitors, local residents, and their economies thrive. The VISTA will coordinate efforts across these partnerships that will help local leaders focus on how Marlinton can market itself as a hub and destination for outdoor recreation to visitors rather than just a stop along the way.

The position begins July 1st and runs through June 30th, 2023.  It is a full-time position and you must be at least 18 years old to apply.  Applications will be accepted through August 31st, 2022.  For more information, you may contact Erin Susman at 304-533-1077 or e.susman@wvhub.org.
