VPAS Calendar for August

As children around the area look towards the end of summer and the start of school, their senior counterparts can continue to look towards activities geared especially for them with the Second Wind calendar of events planned for August.

On Tuesday, August 15th, a 10:00 am exit time is planned for a shopping trip to Franklin WV, with lunch at the Gateway Restaurant in Riverton. Home pick-up is also available.

Digital assistance will be available on two Tuesdays, August 8th and 22nd, at the Highland County Public Library with individual technical assistance given with Computers with Deborah from 10:00 am to Noon.

Elders can also get moving or get quiet during the month, with numerous classes and workshops sponsored by VPAS and the Highland Medical Center, including martial arts, seated and regular yoga, and meditation. The weight management support group meetings are currently on hiatus until September.

Other non-VPAS sponsored activities to take advantage of during the month include a trip to the West Virginia State Fair on Wednesday, August 9th, with a $10 fee and the Highland County Fair, which runs from August 30th to September 2nd.

The VPAS offices and Meals On Wheels kitchen will be closed September 4th for Labor Day, and no home delivery of meals that day.

For more information or to register for any of these activities, or to get on the e-mail distribution list for monthly calendars, contact VPAS Senior Services Coordinator Harmony Leonard at 540-468-2178 or email harmony@vpas.info.

Scott Smith

Scott Smith is the General Manager for Allegheny Mountain Radio and Station Coordinator and News Reporter for WVLS. Scott’s family has deep roots in Highland County. While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center. He lives in Hightown with wife Michelle and son Ethan. In his spare time, he wishes he had more spare time, especially to ride his prized Harley-Davidson motorcycle. scott@amrmail.org
