Walking across America

Monterey, VA – There’s something about the idea of a man walking all the way across the country that makes people feel generous.

And makes people want to talk with him.

The question, Why are you doing this? comes to mind.

For Branch Clarke, of Richmond, Va., it’s a way to tap into that generosity to raise money for a good cause. But there are also some personal reasons he decided to leave the east coast and set out for the west, on foot.

Clarke stopped for the night in Monterey Tuesday. He was welcomed with a reception at the Trimble House Bed and Breakfast, where proprietor Katie Gwin was kind enough to offer him a free room for the night. Some parts of his journey probably won’t be so cushy.
