Pocahontas County Veterans Honor Corps

Harlan Whiting has served in the Pocahontas County Veterans Honor Corps for eight years. He is currently their rifle commander. He says that of the 900 veterans in Pocahontas County, only twenty serve in the volunteer Veterans Honor Corps. But he says those who do are happy to provide their fellow veterans the honor they are due.

Over the past ten years, American Legion Post 92 has been losing members. Wednesday night, post members and district leaders met to discuss the post’s fate. Three Post 92 members volunteered to serve as officers to keep the post going. Nonetheless, more members and participation are needed to make it work longterm.

Emergency Services take on Snowshoe Mountain

On winter weekends, visitors to Snowshoe Mountain Resort swell the population of Pocahontas County to twice its permanent size. County Emergency Serivces Director Melvin Martin says he always has two things on his mind: the Greenbrier River and the potential for a dangerous situation at Snowshoe. First responders, state emergency workers and the National Guard will prepare for the latter possibility during a massive field drill June 7.

Parent company ClubCorp, based in Dallas, announced last week it had hired a financial consultant to explore options – including possible sale of the company.
